Bookshelves Makeover

On Thursday evening, after Big Brother had ended at 9pm, I was all set to start getting ready for bed, when I came up with the great idea to reorganize my books alphabetically by author’s last name. Most people would wait until the weekend or another evening when they have a designated time, but I’m not most people. So starting at 9pm, I started organizng my books and throwing them all over the floor (sorry neighbors). I dont think I estimated how much work it was going to take, especially when you own about 300 books. Here is a mid-process shot of what it looked like at 10:30.

Of course in the middle of this, my other gulity pleasure came on television, “Jersey Shore” (hey-don’t judge me!) so I’d watch clips of that and run back to my book organizing. When it was all finished it took me until 12am to get it all done, but each book has a designated place and it’s easier to navigate and who doesn’t want that, right? My question to you lovely readers is… How do you organize your books??? By author, title, color? Let me know, I’m curious!!!

The final results looks like this and I couldn’t be happier!

I have been fighting the urge to reorganize my shelves, too, but they have to go where they fit, as well. For now, they’re just adult and children’s separately, and books by the same author are shelved together.

I’ve thought of alphabetizing, but I’m not sure how it would look…

You’re like me: these ideas hit at late hours!

Your shelves look awesome! Nice work! I love a well organized shelf πŸ™‚ I organize mine by color and I think it’s fascinating to see how everyone is different and then what that produces!

I love it! I’m one of those people who used to organize her CD’s alphabetically (you know, back when I actually bought CD’s and didn’t have an iPod to organize all my music for me), so the idea of organizing books by title appeals. The task, however, would be way too daunting πŸ™‚ I organize by categories: adult fiction, young adult fiction, adult non-fiction, children’s non-fiction and then I divide the non-fiction into subcategories: parenting books, inspirational, religious, etc.

Your shelves look great, by the way!

Lovely! I think it’s great you just jumped right in and took care of business. You wouldn’t have been able to sleep anyway just thinking about doing it. Right now my books are arranged by genre, hard covers together, and read and unread. When I get my reading room created, I don’t know how I will do it. So many different ways.

You are putting me to shame. I’d love to better organize my bookshelves. At the moment I have one shelf organized by color and the rest are just a mishmash of things.
