Typically I’m not a fan of mysteries; however, after reading about 20 pages of Nancy Pickard’s “The Scent of Rain and Lightning” I decided to make an exception, because the writing was so fresh and intriguing that I couldn’t put it down.
The story starts with a woman named Jody who lives in the home where her father was murdered and her mother disappeared from 26 years ago. If that isn’t shocking enough for you, the first few pages introduces you to her 3 uncles (who’ve all had a hand in raising her) showing up to her home to tell her that her father’s convicted killer is being released from jail after all these years and he plans on living right down the street from her. After hearing this news, Jody’s grandparents understanably urge her to move to their home for safety reasons.
Nancy Pickard then takes us back 26 years earlier to explain the events that took place and we get to meet a young Jody. Luckily for the reader (and especially me, because I’m a wimp) there wasn’t too much description of the murder. All fingers quickly point to the town trouble maker, Billy Crosby and he is thrown in jail right away. We then hop back to the current year where Jody is trying to put pieces together and avoid the man that took her father’s life and gave her nightmares for years. The story turns into a “who done it” story as Jody tries to piece together facts and evidence.
Jody is also very intrigued with the man who helped to release Billy from jail, his son Collin. He’s always been the boy she was told to avoid and the amonsity she’s felt for him over that years comes to a head now that they are adults.
The story is gripping and will make you want to try and put together all the pieces that Jody is uncovering throughout the novel. There were parts in the story that were a little weak and “typical” but more often than not, I found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what was going to happen next. Believe me, you’ll be blown away with the ending!!!
